Tales from the Trail
The Big Dig 2022

CANCELLED: On January 23rd 2022, New Zealand moved to red level under the Covid-19 Protection Framework and so the April event has been cancelled. The Trail Trust hope to schedule the Big Dig later this year.

The Big Dig returns to Carters Beach on Sunday 17 April. Held during the first weekend of the Easter school holidays, the event is a fundraiser for the maintenance of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail. Last year, a combination of the entrance fees, Raffle, Merchandise and delicious BBQ saw a whopping total of $2,943 raised for the Trail.

Over 400 participants dug for stones, and thanks to the generosity of 26 Sponsors there were fabulous prizes for treasure. Lucky winners took away accommodation vouchers, food, massages, tours, movie tickets, books, and a family train trip.

Last year’s Major Sponsor, Carters Beach Top 10 Holiday Park donated $500 towards a prize that was valued at $660, for a trip for four with Outwest Tours, including a Donaldo’s voucher. We’ll be announcing this year’s Major Sponsors in the coming weeks.

Digging for puipuiaki (treasure) offers so much fun for the whole family. We can’t wait to welcome all the Volunteers, Sponsors and participants who will hopefully make the Event bigger and pai kē atu (better) for its second year.

The Kawatiri Coastal Trail needs donations to support its maintenance and ongoing operations. If you would like to make a contribution, you can do so via the Givealittle Page.
