So Good I Had to Do It Twice
By Kevin Searle
Having ridden most of New Zealand’s cycle trails, I’m always on the lookout for a new adventure. While away skiing in Canada this March, I got a call from a friend — the Kawatiri Coastal Trail had just opened.
Jet-lagged but excited, I figured there was no better remedy than a good ride. A couple of days after I landed, we were off — and what a surprise it turned out to be.
A Small Trail with Big Impact
I was blown away. I couldn’t believe how much was packed into just 40 kilometres.
Rainforest, stunning beaches, bird-filled estuaries, and a fascinating blend of farmland and native bush restoration — it had everything. It was one of the longest “short” rides I’ve done in a while, simply because I kept stopping to take photos.
Around every corner was another breathtaking view. I honestly don’t think any other trail in New Zealand offers so much variety in such a compact ride.
A Weekend Ride, Twice as Nice
We made a weekend of it. The forecast was good, so we left Christchurch around 9 a.m. and cruised up to Charleston. From there, we rode to Westport, stayed the night, and rode back the next day. Then home again – all in one weekend
And here’s the kicker — it felt like two completely different rides. The scenery, the light, the experience — everything shifted on the return leg.
The West Coast hospitality also stood out, especially at the Underworld Adventure Café in Charleston, (a great place to start and finish), and throughout Westport. Friendly faces, good food, and that laid-back vibe you only find in this part of the country.
A Trail for Everyone
What struck me most was how accessible the trail is. The surface is excellent, and while there are a few switchbacks, they’re well signposted, giving less confident riders the option to walk.
For more experienced cyclists, the flow is just right — smooth, fast, and fun.
I was so impressed that my wife and I returned just two weekends later. And, believe it or not, it was even better the second time.
Final Word: Just Go
If you’re even remotely interested in New Zealand’s cycle trails, make sure the Kawatiri Coastal Trail is on your list.
Whether you’re into scenery, adventure, or just a good weekend ride — go do it.
