National recognition for a trail built by many hands
March 23, 2026
Almost exactly one year on from its official opening, the Kawatiri Coastal Trail has been formally presented with the national Outdoor Access Champion Award – a meaningful milestone for a project shaped by the strength of community effort.
The award, presented by Herenga ā Nuku – New Zealand Outdoor Access Commission, recognises initiatives that significantly improve public access while delivering wider benefits for communities, the environment and regional resilience. The Kawatiri Coastal Trail was selected from nominations across the country, reflecting both the scale of the project and the collaborative approach behind it.
Trust Chair Richard Niederer and Trustee and former Construction Manager Stu Henley accepted the award on behalf of the Charleston–Westport Coastal Trail Trust and the many people who have contributed over the life of the project. Their involvement reflects both the governance and on-the-ground leadership that helped bring the trail from concept through to completion.
Since opening, the trail has quickly established itself as a standout visitor experience on the West Coast, offering a safe and accessible off-road journey between Westport and Charleston. Along the way, it connects people with a remarkable coastal landscape, rich local history and a series of thoughtfully designed structures including bridges, boardwalks and viewing points.
The award also recognises the complexity of what has been achieved. Delivering the trail required extensive collaboration with private landowners, iwi, agencies and community groups, alongside the commitment of volunteers, contractors, funders and supporters. It is a project that has brought together a wide network of people, all contributing in different ways toward a shared vision.
While the award is a national recognition, it is also a local story. It reflects years of determination, partnership and belief in what the trail could become – not just as a recreational asset, but as something that strengthens community connection and supports the future of the Buller region.
This recognition belongs to everyone who has played a part. From early champions and trustees through to landowners, volunteers, partners, funders and our wider community – thank you.
