Tales from the Trail
Behind The Lens With Brya Rodley

Buller District Libraries will shortly have a new image on their library cards, after running an art competition back in May of this year.

The competition was run with the theme Buller OR Books. Hopeful entrants of all ages submitted art and photographs, with a view to it being the winning image on the library cards.

The 26 creative entries were judged by the library staff members, with three prizes up for grabs, consisting of vouchers from local businesses.

First prize went to Brya Rodley for her photograph entitled Nile. Second prize was awarded to Carol McFadgen with Little books, and Rachel Menzies won Third prize with Essence of Buller Paradise.

Brya’s photo of the Nile River Bridge was chosen for its vibrant colours, excellent composition and stunning local scenery – all of which met the competition criteria perfectly.

We invited Brya to tell us about her passion for photography, what it feels like to win the competition, and how she hopes it might help her in the future.

How did you come to enter the photography competition?

My Mum sent me the website link for the competition, and I decided to have a look. I thought it was a good chance to get my photography out in public, and so I gave it a go.

What made you choose the Buller theme and not Books?

I chose the Buller theme, because I enjoy taking photos of nature and my surroundings in the Buller District.

Congratulations on being the Winner! How does it feel?

When my Mum got a call from the Westport Library to say I had won, I was so full of happy emotions. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I am super thankful to have won, and excited, as I know this will help my future.

What hopes do you have for your photography in the future?

I hope to become more well known for my photography. I take a lot of photos of scenery and animals, but I would really like to start taking more portrait photographs.
